Beirut – Day 2

🖋️ Sdkfz251 · 📅 January 5, 2026 · 🏷️ Tales from the middle east, Daily program, Lebanon

The second day in Beirut is best explored on foot. This itinerary focuses on the city’s dense, layered inner spaces, where historic churches, modern urban squares, renovated pedestrian streets, and contemporary architectural landmarks follow one another within short distances.

A walking pace allows the smaller details to emerge — street cafés, weathered façades, unexpected passageways. It is not a performance-driven route, but a conscious urban stroll, where Beirut becomes both more understandable and more complex at the same time.

This day fits naturally with the downtown highlights and is ideal for finding your rhythm within the city.

Saint George’s Maronite Cathedral

Saint George’s Maronite Cathedral – Beirut

Saint George’s Maronite Cathedral is one of Beirut’s most important Christian churches and a principal seat of the Maronite Church. Built in the late 19th century, the cathedral combines Neo-Byzantine and Neoclassical elements, and as a structure that endured the upheavals of Lebanese history — including the civil war — it is deeply embedded in the city’s cultural memory. The cathedral stands at the heart of Beirut’s religious life and faces the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, a powerful symbol of the city’s multicultural identity.

Beirut Souks

Historic market district – modern shopping complex

Beirut Souks is one of the city’s most dynamic urban areas, where the atmosphere of the historic marketplace meets a contemporary shopping district. Along pedestrian streets reminiscent of the old bazaar, fashion brands, designer boutiques, cafés, and restaurants line the walkways, while the architectural design respects the city’s historic street grid and medieval roots. The Souks form a central element of the Solidere redevelopment project: at once a shopping destination, urban meeting point, and modern public space.
📍 Location: Beirut Central District, among the downtown pedestrian streets

Opening hours: 10:00–22:00

Beirut North Souks – Department Store

Contemporary commercial building with iconic diagrid façade

Beirut North Souks – Department Store is one of the city’s most distinctive contemporary urban buildings, immediately recognizable by its undulating, diamond-shaped (diagrid) façade. The exterior is not merely decorative: it provides shading while giving the structure a sculptural, almost futuristic presence. Functionally, it operates as a modern department store and retail center, housing shops, dining venues, and services within its interior spaces. It stands as a strong example of the Beirut where traditional urban fabric meets the visual language of global metropolitan architecture.
📍 Location: North Beirut (North Souks district)

Opening hours: 10:00–22:00
💵 Admission: free entry (shops individually priced)
