The Royal Core
Győr, Veszprém, Székesfehérvár és a csendes központ
For a long time, I wasn’t sure what to make of this region — this so-called “Royal Core,” the historic heartland of early Hungarian statehood in Western Central Hungary.
Through father–son trips, half-day visits, and repeated returns, the quiet center formed by Győr, Veszprém, and Székesfehérvár gradually came together for me. These are historic towns within easy reach of Budapest, each once closely connected to royal or ecclesiastical power — coronations, queens, bishops, and medieval strongholds.
This is not the story of a single journey, but rather a recommendation: this is how the region becomes understandable — not in one sweep, but through layered visits, short walks, and time spent absorbing its understated atmosphere.
Western Central Hungary
For a long time, this region remained unfamiliar to me. Not because it was far away, but because there was always a more obvious direction, a louder city, a clearer destination. Western Central Hungary felt like a transitional zone on the map — between two larger bodies of water, a few recognizable names, and countless missed opportunities.
When my son began to enjoy our father–son trips, this region slowly moved closer. Not as one grand journey, but in the form of short, star-shaped excursions: one city at a time, one day at a time, with returns, interruptions, and re-planning along the way. There was no master plan behind it — only curiosity and time.
We never visited the region as a single unit, and I never experienced it that way. Yet later, when I tried to assemble a coherent picture from these separate trips, towns, and impressions, a perspective emerged that reaches beyond personal memories. For international visitors, this area may not appear on the classic “must-see” lists, yet it offers a quieter, more authentic cross-section of Hungarian urban history — less crowded than Budapest, but deeply rooted in medieval statehood and regional culture.
If a foreign friend asked me how to explore this part of Hungary, this is the itinerary I would recommend. Not because we followed it in this exact way, but because this is how it becomes understandable — spatially, rhythmically, and atmospherically.
This is not a travel diary.
It is a recommendation — from the quiet center of a functioning country.
